For the third straight season, Toombs County has opened with a flawless 3-0 record. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 1 in the state, flexed their firepower Friday night in a 55-8 rout over the Mustangs, showcasing a balanced attack and a relentless defense.
Toombs set the tone early with a methodical 12-play, 74-yard drive that chewed up over six minutes before senior running back Hayden Roy powered into the end zone from a yard out. The Bulldogs wasted no time on their next possession, as senior Justin Powell sprinted 37 yards for a touchdown on the first play. Powell would add two more scores before the night was over, giving the Mustangs’ defense fits every time he touched the ball.
The Bulldogs’ “Red Bullet” defense proved just as dominant, forcing four turnovers and giving their offense extra opportunities to cash in. Junior Donterrius Mincey added two touchdowns, sophomore Nick Carroll hauled in a 53-yard strike, and senior Gavin Fletcher electrified the crowd with a 63-yard touchdown reception.
Quarterback Joseph Owens, a junior, turned in a career night under center, completing 19 of 30 passes for 344 yards and two touchdowns. Senior wideout Justice Wilds led the receiving corps with six catches for 69 yards, while senior Alex Scott paced the defense with eight tackles.
The Bulldogs now turn their attention to a marquee matchup with perennial powerhouse Rome. Toombs edged the Wolves 33-29 in Rome last season, and this year’s clash promises to be another early-season test of championship potential.
