On Saturday, the Toombs County Bulldogs were hitting on all cylinders, winning big over Athens Academy in a game that was played at a neutral site in Savannah, GA at Savannah Country Day.
Brantley Upshaw had a huge day at the plate. Upshaw tallied four hits leading Toombs County to the 14-4 win. Upshaw singled in the first, singled in the second, doubled in the fourth, and added a homer in the fifth.
The Bulldogs got things rolling in the first inning when Jesus Quintero doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring a run. The Dawgs pulled away for good with three runs in the fourth inning. In the inning Trayvone Harris grounded out, scoring one run, Upshaw doubled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run, and Will Watts singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
The Bulldogs added another five runs in the fifth. The offense in the inning came from doubles by Tyson Brantley and Harris and the home run by Upshaw.
Toombs County earned the victory despite allowing Athens Academy to score three runs in the third inning. Gavin Hall took the win for the Bulldogs. The righty went three innings, allowing three runs on two hits and striking out five. Tucker Braddy and Lucas O’Conner entered the game out of the bullpen, threw strikes, and helped to close out the game in relief.
Toombs County totaled 17 hits in the game. Upshaw, T. Brantley, Quintero, and Watts all managed multiple hits for the Bulldogs. Upshaw led the team with four hits in five at bats.
