The Toombs County Bulldogs secured a hard-fought 4-2 win over Savannah Country Day on Thursday.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Joseph Owens singled to drive in Nick Carroll, giving Toombs a 1-0 advantage. From there, the game remained scoreless until the late in the game.
Savannah Country Day tied things up in the top of the sixth with a solo home run from Jackson Sammons, but the Bulldogs answered right back in their half of the inning. Nick Carroll doubled to right field driving in a run to break the tie, Owens added an RBI single down the line, and a Hornets’ error allowed another run to score, pushing Toombs County ahead 4-1.
The Hornets wold pick up another run in the top of the seventh, but the Bulldogs would hold on for the victory.
Ty Hutchinson earned the win on the mound, throwing 5.2 strong innings. He allowed just three hits and one run while striking out six and walking four. Carroll came on in relief to close things out and recorded the save.
Owens led the Bulldogs offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Carroll’s key double in the sixth ultimately sparked the rally for the Dogs to get the win in game two of the three game series.
The Bulldogs will wrap up the series with Savannah Country Day on Friday at 5 PM. They currently lead the series 2-0 and are looking to get the sweep in their first region series of the year.
