Bulldogs Battle After Tough First Inning

The Toombs County Bulldogs faced an early challenge Wednesday night, as a five-run first inning put them in an uphill battle in an 8-2 loss.

Toombs wasted no time getting on the board. In the top of the first inning, Riley Kersey delivered an RBI single to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead and set the tone with aggressive at-bats.

However, defensive miscues in the bottom half of the inning allowed the opponent to capitalize, plating five runs and shifting momentum. Despite the early setback, the Bulldogs continued to compete and settled in defensively as the game progressed.

Offensively, Kersey drove in both Bulldog runs, finishing 1-for-3 at the plate. Nick Carroll sparked the lineup from the leadoff spot, collecting two hits in three at-bats and consistently putting pressure on the defense.

Head Coach Derek James emphasized growth and resilience following the game.

“We have to do a better job limiting big innings,” said James. “When you give up five in the first, you’re playing uphill the rest of the night. I’m proud of how we kept competing, but we’ve got to clean up the little things.”

The Bulldogs will look to bounce back in their next outing as they continue building momentum and sharpening the details that make the difference in tight contests.
