Bulldogs Fall in Heartbreaking Fashion Despite Strong Offensive Showing

Lyons, GA. – March 3, 2024 | Coach Derek James

The Toombs County Bulldogs baseball team fell to the Coffee County Trojans in a dramatic 6-5 defeat on Friday. Despite out-hitting the Trojans and leading for most of the game, the Bulldogs couldn’t hold on in the final inning.

Trailing 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Trojans staged a late comeback. Payton Bryant delivered the decisive blow with a two-run double, securing the win for Coffee. Even in defeat, the Bulldogs hit well with seven different players collecting hits. TJ Stanley led the way with two RBIs. Ryder Sears and MJ Burton also contributed key hits that helped the Bulldogs stay ahead for most of the game.

The Bulldogs drew first blood in the top of the first inning when Stanley drew a walk, bringing in a run. They added another run in the fourth inning thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Sears and a single by Burton. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs were unable to hold on to their lead. An error in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Trojans to score one run, setting the stage for Bryant’s game-winning double.

TJ Stanley delivered a solid performance on the mound. The right-handed pitcher pitched six innings, allowing three hits and three runs (one earned), striking out nine and walking five. He kept the Bulldogs in the game for most of the night, but the late rally by the Trojans proved too much to overcome.

The Bulldogs will look to bounce back in their next matchup on Tuesday as they square off against the Swainsboro Tigers at home on Tuesday, March 5th at 5:45 pm.
