Bulldogs Overcome Early Deficit to Defeat Wheeler County 11-2

Lyons, GA. – August 20, 2024 | Coach Hayne Brant

Casey Cantwell had an impressive day at the plate, going 4-for-5 as the Toombs County Lady Dawgs powered past Wheeler County with an 11-2 victory on Monday. Cantwell’s consistent hitting helped propel the Bulldogs, as she singled in the third, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.

On the mound, Shay Stringer was dominant, striking out 11 batters over five innings. Stringer allowed just one hit and one run, though she issued three walks. Cantwell also pitched in relief for Toombs County to help secure the win.

Despite Wheeler County getting on the board first with a second-inning single from Molly Wright that drove in a run, the Bulldogs quickly turned the game around. Toombs County erupted in the fifth inning, scoring six runs on five hits to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Cantwell’s clutch single in the inning drove in two runs, swinging the momentum fully in favor of the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs’ offense was strong throughout the game, tallying 11 hits. Taylor Bland, Natalie Quintero, and Elly Haygood each drove in two runs. Quintero also showed patience at the plate, drawing three walks, while the team as a whole accumulated eight walks. On the basepaths, Emerson Powell and Nora Grace Mercer led the way with multiple stolen bases, contributing to the team’s total of six steals.

Defensively, the Bulldogs were sharp, turning a double play and committing no errors.

The Lady Dawgs will look to keep their momentum going as they play at home on Wednesday against the Metter Varsity Tigers. JV game time is slated for 4 PM and the Varsity will follow at 6 PM. Currently, the Bulldogs sit at 6-1 on the young season.
