On Saturday, the Toombs County Lady Dog Softball team stayed busy traveling to Portal for a game against the Swainsboro Tigers and Portal Panthers.
In the first game, Toombs County jumped out to an early lead over Swainsboro and took home a 10-4 victory. The Lady Dogs scored on a single by Aniston Powell in the first inning, and singles in the second inning by Casey Cantwell, Powell, and Kassidy Brantley. The Lady Dogs also put up five runs in the sixth inning to pull away for good. The Dogs were led by Cantwell, Nora Grace Mercer, Shay Stringer, and Brinley Miller, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.
Stringer led the Lady Dawgs to victory in the pitcher’s circle. The lefty allowed seven hits and four runs over seven innings, striking out 12.
Toombs County hit one home run on the day with Cantwell going deep in the sixth inning.
Toombs County scattered 11 hits in the game. Stringer, Brantley, Emerson Powell, Cantwell, and Powell each managed multiple hits for The Lady Dawgs. A. Powell, Cantwell, E. Powell, Brantley, and Stringer each collected two hits to lead the Dawgs.
In the second game versus Portal, Casey Cantwell had all the right stuff for The Lady Dogs, allowing zero runs and besting Portal by a score of 5-0. She was the winning pitcher for Toombs County. Cantwell lasted seven innings, allowing three hits and zero runs while striking out ten and walking zero.
The Lady Dawgs fired up the offense in the first inning, when Kassidy Brantley grounded out, scoring one run. Riley Lumley went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the way for the Lady Dogs.
I am super proud of how we played this weekend. We started swinging the bats better against some good pitching. We have to carry this momentum into region play.Coach Hayne Brant
