Lyons, GA. – February 24, 2023 | Coach Todd Allen

The MatDawgs ended their season this past weekend in historic fashion as they matched a program high 3rd place as a team. They also matched a program record with 6 individuals reaching the podium (top 6) at their respective weight classes. The MatDawgs had two reach the finals match of the tournament, Tank Morris and Wil Watts. Both came up short in the final bout of their high school careers. “It was heartbreaking seeing both of those guys come up just short of their goals this season. Both of them seemingly did everything right leading up to it, but unfortunately it didn’t go in their favor. They’ve both had tremendous wrestling careers at Toombs and a lasting impact on our program, this school, and Toombs County.”, said Coach Allen of the senior’s success this season.

The other four place winners were senior Giovanni Yescas (5th place), junior Brock Nobles (4th place) sophomore Dabvn Wadley (4th place), and sophomore Jahir Lopez (5th place). Giovanni, Brock, and Jahir all had tough losses in the first round of the tournament and showed determination to wrestle through the backside to land on the podium. All three avenged losses to opponents from in the season to reach the podium. Dabvn reached the semifinals of the tournament, guaranteeing himself a spot on the podium. “Incredible tournament for these young men. I’ve seen them work so hard this season and to see them reach their goals is very special.”, acknowledged Coach Allen of his State placer’s accomplishments.

The MatDawgs end their season adding to the history books at Toombs County High School and looking ahead at an exciting future. Coach Allen says, “The sky is the limit for this program. We have exceptional kids that work hard and have bought into a championship mindset. The progress has been remarkable and it is a testament to these young men and women that work so hard! To say I am a proud coach is an understatement!”
