Nora Grace Mercer had a standout performance on Monday, going 3-for-4 at the plate as the Toombs County Lady Dawgs secured an 8-4 win over Pierce County. Mercer singled in the first, second, and fifth innings, driving in two crucial runs to help lift the Bulldogs to victory.

Pierce County struck first in the top of the second inning when a Bear doubled to bring in a run. However, Toombs County responded quickly in the bottom of the second. Emerson Powell hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring one run, followed by Mercer’s two-run single. Casey Cantwell then hit into another fielder’s choice, but it was enough to score one more run, giving Toombs a 4-1 lead.

Cantwell earned the win for the Lady Dawgs, pitching two innings and allowing just two hits and one unearned run. She struck out two and walked one. Shay Stringer came in to close the game, securing the save. Stringer would later be honored in the top of the 7th inning after earning career strikeout number 500 as a Bulldog in the top of the 6th. Congrats to Shay on this huge milestone!

Aniston Powell also contributed offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate for Toombs County. The team racked up six hits overall, with Mercer leading the charge.

Next up for the Lady Dawgs is a region matchup against the SHS Lady Tigers on Tuesday in Swainsboro at 6 PM. The Lady Dawgs are now 16-2 on the year and 9-0 in region play.
