Toombs County Baseball Wins Over Screven County

Both teams were strong on the mound Monday, but Toombs County held off Screven County for a 3-2 victory.

Screven County struck first in the top of the opening inning scoring one run.

Toombs County responded in the bottom half of the inning, taking the lead after Lawton Toole and Tyson Brantley each drew bases-loaded walks to bring in a pair of runs.

Screven County tied the game at two in the top of the third inning when Wyatt Sowell worked a walk that forced in a run.

Toombs County regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Nick Carroll delivered a clutch double to score a run and give the Bulldogs a 3-2 advantage.

Ty Hutchinson earned the win for Toombs County, pitching five innings while allowing seven hits and two runs. Both runs were unearned. Hutchinson struck out five and walked four while battling through traffic most of the night.

Carroll and Riley Kersey each tossed scoreless innings in relief to preserve the win.

Carroll and Brantley each drove in a run for Toombs County. Joseph Owens was a spark on the base paths, stealing three bases as the Bulldogs totaled four stolen bases in the game.

“To win a tight game like that says a lot about our guys,” said Toombs County head coach Derek James. “Ty competed all night and kept working out of tough spots. Our defense made some big plays behind him, and our bullpen came in and finished it off.”

Toombs County will travel to Prince Avenue Christian for its next game on March 14.
