Toombs County Boys Basketball Kicks Off Season with a Split in First Two Games

Lyons, GA. – December 19, 2024 | Head Coach Jared Goodwin

———-

The Toombs County Boys Basketball team tipped off the 2024-2025 season on December 7, still awaiting the return of 13 football players who were fresh off their historic state championship win. Despite the limited roster, the team showed grit and determination as they took on Jeff Davis at home in the season opener.

The Bulldogs led 22-21 at halftime, but the short-handed squad eventually fell 60-46 in a hard-fought game. Several players gained valuable experience, stepping up in a challenging situation. Leading the way was Parker Stanley with a double-double of 17 points, 10 rebounds, along with 3 assists and 3 blocks. Jaydan Mitchell contributed 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 blocks, while Tucker Braddy added 5 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. The game may not have gone in the Bulldogs’ favor, but it provided valuable learning opportunities for the young team as they started 0-1 in non-region play.

Thrilling Finish Earns First Win at Telfair County

On December 14, the Bulldogs traveled to Telfair County for their second game of the season, still fielding only 7 players. This time, the team delivered a nail-biting 40-37 victory, highlighted by a dramatic finish.

Toombs County led 21-14 at halftime and extended the lead to 34-21 at the end of the third quarter. However, Telfair mounted a comeback, tying the game with less than two minutes remaining. With just 24 seconds left, the Bulldogs had the ball and called a play for Parker Stanley. Instead of forcing a shot, Stanley dished it out to Jaden Gillis, who drained a clutch three-pointer with just over two seconds on the clock to secure the win.

Stanley once again led the Bulldogs with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Mitchell added 8 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocks, while Braddy chipped in 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. Gillis made his mark with 5 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals, including the game-winning shot.

Looking Ahead

The Bulldogs now turn their attention to region play. They’ll face Savannah Christian at home on December 19, followed by another home game against Bacon County on December 20. With the full roster soon to be available, the Bulldogs are poised for an exciting season. Go Dawgs!
