Toombs County Boys Basketball Loses on a Last Second Shot to Telfair County.

Lyons, GA. – December 20, 2022 | Coach Jared Goodwin

On December 20, 2023, the Toombs County boys basketball team played a tight, down to the final buzzer, game against Telfair County. This was a matchup of two teams that were playing well and a game that gave fans everything they would want to see.

The first quarter of the game was a back-and-forth battle with both teams scoring at a high rate and knocking down shots. Neither team seemed to be able to separate itself, and by the end of the quarter, it was knotted up at 17-17.

The second quarter was very similar with each team still shooting the ball well. The Dawgs were not able to give themselves any type of lead during the quarter and Telfair took a 29-26 lead into halftime.

The third quarter is where the Dawgs had some troubles on the offensive end. The shooting went a little cold during the period, and Telfair took advantage and was able to take the lead from halftime and extend it out, going up 43-33 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter is where the excitement happened and both teams gave the fans a great ending. With the Dawgs searching for some offense, Tamarien McArthur came off the bench and provided the spark they needed. McArthur came in and made three 3pt baskets during the quarter and the Dawgs came fighting back. In the final minute the Dawgs had the ball down one and Dominic Eason was able to draw a foul and get to the free throw line. He was able to make one of two and tied the game. With less than 30 seconds remaining in the game Telfair held for the last shot, and with a hand in their face they hit a long 3pt basket at the buzzer for Telfair to escape with the win, 54-51.

Dominic Eason led the Dawgs with 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Tamarien McArthur came off the bench and had 9 points. Demetrius Cutler had 8 points and 7 rebounds.
