Toombs County Football finished off Spring with a win over Charlton County on Thursday, May 4, 2023.
The Bulldogs hit the turf at the PIT for the first time this year with almost a brand new look, although there are still some familiar faces on the coaching staff. Long time Defensive Coordinator and New Bulldog Head Coach Buddy Martin showed off his new staff in a productive ball game that left the Bulldog faithful excited for this fall!
Returning to the the Bulldog staff are two key members of past teams as Co-Offensive Coordinator, Jared Hamlin, returns to Toombs County after an impressive stint in Putnam County as the Offensive Coordinator. Coach Nick Hayes also returns to the staff after Coordinator and Head Coach positions at Putnam County, Turner County, Wayne County, and Appling Counties. Newcomer, but former Quarterback, Jordan Usher, is back at the school coaching Middle School Football. Other new coaches to the program include coach Ridge Ferrell, who is on staff coaching receivers. Coach Ferrell transitions from Pinewood where he served the Offensive Coordinator. If you were at the game and wondered who the really fired up coach was on the Bulldog sideline, well that is new Defensive Coordinator, Jeff Smothers. Coach Smothers was as exciting to watch as the Bulldog defense that produced 6 turnovers on the night. Coach Smothers left his head coaching position in Florida to lead the Red Bullet Defense! Returning coaches from last season are coaches Wesley Bratton, Cornelius Bullard, Logan Daves, Ken Dixon, and Rigoberto Tinoco.
When it comes to game action, the game started with both JV’s getting on the field with the JV Dogs and Indians exchanging drives for 6-minutes apiece ending the quarter with no score. There were quite a few bright spots with our younger Dogs including an interception by Alex Scott and a solid defensive play by Hayden Johnson, Slade Mcdonald, and MJ Burton.
The Varsity Clubs went to battle in the second quarter. Toombs County Place Kicker Angel Morales opened the scoring with a 33 yard field goal to give the Dogs a 3-0 lead. Charlton County snuck in a long pass play right before the half on a crossing route and converted the 2-point conversion to give the Indians an 8-3 half time lead.
In the second half it was all Bulldogs. The defensive unit punished the Charlton County QBs all night with an aggressive attack from Brock Nobles, Brandon McCall, and Hunter Barwick. Mike Polke had a day with 2 touchdowns, one on each side of the ball. Hayden Roy played a solid QB for the Bulldogs rattling off a couple of long runs.
Toombs County finished the game winning 31-8 and have us all counting down the days to Opening Day Kickoff!
