Toombs County battled Appling in a pitchers’ duel Thursday, but two costly errors helped turn the game as the Bulldogs fell 3-1.
Taylor Bland got the start in the circle for Toombs County and turned in a strong outing, working six innings and allowing seven hits and three runs, all unearned. Bland struck out three and walked just one.
Toombs County struck first in the top of the first inning. Lindy Morris delivered a sacrifice fly to score a run and give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead.
Appling answered in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a Toombs County error to tie the game at 1-1. Another error in the bottom of the third allowed Appling to take a 2-1 lead. Both pitching staffs kept the opposing offense in check throughout the game.
“Taylor pitched a really good game for us, and our defense just didn’t give her the support she deserved,” Coach Brant said. “We had some opportunities offensively, but we’ve got to clean up the little things. The good thing about this group is they’ll respond, and we’ll be ready to get back after it Monday.”
Peyton Bland and Kylah Gay led the Bulldogs at the plate with two hits apiece, while Morris drove in Toombs County’s lone run.
Appling’s M. Jones earned the win after allowing seven hits and one run over seven innings, striking out six and walking one.
Toombs County will look to bounce back Monday when the Bulldogs travel to Liberty County.
