On Monday and Tuesday, May 19–20, the Toombs County golf team competed in the GHSA 1A-D1 State Championship at Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course in Elberton. Nestled along the scenic shores of Lake Hartwell, the venue provided a stunning backdrop for high-level competition hosted by Elbert County.

After a strong opening round score of 333, the Bulldogs found themselves in solo third place, putting them firmly in contention heading into day two. The team’s performance reflected both skill and composure under pressure.

However, the second round brought new challenges, as gusty winds and rising temperatures tested the players’ endurance. The Bulldogs battled through tough conditions to shoot a 348, bringing their two-day total to 681 and earning a sixth-place finish—one of the best in program history.

Junior standout Clay Conner led the way with a combined score of 162 (78/84), tying for 13th place overall among the tournament’s top individual performers. Supporting the Bulldogs’ top-10 finish were Vick Moore and Gavin Ward, each carding 172 (Moore: 86/86, Ward: 81/91), along with Noah Anken, who added a solid 177 (88/89).

Adding to the excitement of the event, junior Sarah Ellis Walker made history as the first female from Toombs County to compete in the state tournament in over a decade. Walker posted a 129 on day one and improved to a 123 on day two, marking a significant milestone for the program and demonstrating her determination and growth throughout the season.

The Bulldogs’ strong finish at the state level highlights a season full of hard work, development, and resilience. With returning talent and growing momentum, Toombs County golf looks forward to continued success in seasons to come.
