Toombs County put together a dominant showing in a doubleheader sweep of Savannah Country Day on Friday, rolling to 11-1 and 17-2 victories behind a balanced attack at the plate and strong pitching performances.
In game one, Toombs County wasted no time setting the tone. A two-run single from Nick Carroll highlighted a five-run first inning that also featured a bases-loaded walk by Ty Hutchinson and a pair of runs scoring on a Savannah Country Day error.
The Bulldogs pulled away for good in the fifth, plating five more runs on four hits. Hutchinson drove in a run with a single, Carroll added a two-run double, and additional runs came on a sacrifice and another error.
Riley Kersey earned the win on the mound, tossing five innings while allowing just two hits and one unearned run. He struck out six without issuing a walk. Carroll led the offense, going 3-for-4, while Carter Allen added a pair of hits.
Game two saw Toombs County’s offense reach another level, erupting for 17 runs on 12 hits, including a nine-run fourth inning that broke the game wide open.
Joseph Owens led the charge with a monster performance, driving in four runs on three hits. He delivered a three-run triple and later added an RBI single in the same inning. The fourth inning rally also included contributions from Ryder Sears, Carroll, Lawton Toole, and Hutchinson, as the lineup produced runs in nearly every way possible.
Toombs County jumped out early again, scoring three runs in the first inning and continuing to build the lead with runs in each of the next two frames. RBI hits from Cam Brown and Brody Benton helped extend the advantage before the fourth inning explosion.
Sears earned the win in game two, allowing two runs over four innings while striking out four.
Carroll and Toole each recorded multiple hits, while Hutchinson showed patience at the plate with two walks. The Bulldogs were aggressive on the bases as well, swiping eight bases and taking advantage of every opportunity. Defensively, Toombs County was flawless, not committing an error.
