Toombs County Track Competes at Regionals

Lyons, GA. – April 21, 2023 | Coach Charles Hartley

On Tuesday April, 18 and Thursday, April 20, 2023, the Toombs County High School track and field teams began their post season at the region 3 AA track meet hosted by Pierce County High School in Blackshear GA. Both teams competed and performed admirably. The meet kicked off Tuesday morning with field events in which several members were able to place in the top eight, with a few placing in the top four earning advancement to the sectional track meet on on May 5, 2023 at Commerce, GA.

On the girls side, Shay Stringer was able to pick up her first gold medal with a first place finish in the Discus. Freshman Liv Patrick impressed with a 6th place finish. Junior Corniesha Bullard just missed an 8th place finish by a half inch in the long jump.

On the boys side sophomore Mike Polke was able to grab 7th place in the triple jump, which is quite impressive considering this was his first time competing in the event. Junior Brock Nobles was able to capture second place finishes in both the discus and shot put. Lastly, freshmen Gavin Fletcher was able to secure a birth to the sectional meet with a second place finish in the high jump and was also able to finish 7th in the shot put in his first time competing in the event.

Day one running events were mostly qualifying races but we did have a couple place earning performances from Bryleigh Woods, 6th place in the 1600, and a 5th place finish by the boys 4x800m relay team (Dovantae Smith, Cole Lovett, Jarvis Monereau, Moses Young). Day one running events ended with several Bulldogs posting times in preliminary races fast enough to come back for finals on day two. Day two qualifiers on the boys side included Lagonza Heyward in the 200m, Erick Stevens in both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, Hayden Roy in the 110 hurdles, and Gavin Fletcher in the 300 hurdles. Day two girls qualifiers were Jaslyn Snead in the 100 hurdles, Bryleigh Woods in the 800m, and Michelle Clark in the 200m dash.

Day two kicked off early in the morning with the girls shot put being re-contested after it was discovered at least one team had competed with an illegal shot put. After all was said and done Shay Stringer picked up her second gold medal with a throw of 33 ft 10 in. Senior D’Anna Griffin picked a sixth place finish.  Big Red is a great competitor and will be missed. Angelica Lara competed well and had the throws from day one stood would have finished third.

Day two running events saw several bulldogs perform well, including a sectional birth and third place finish for Bryleigh Woods in the 3200 run. Michelle Clark returned day two and finished 7th in the 200m dash. The girls 4x100m relay team (Corniesha Bullard, Tatyana Moore, Jaslyn Snead, and Michelle Clark) were able to run a season best time to capture 7th place. Perhaps the most impressive performance of the day for the lady bulldogs was by the girls 4x200m relay. The girls (Corniesha Bullard, Shania Brown, Jaslyn Snead, Michelle Clark) were able to pick up a sectional qualifying spot finishing 4th. The girls team finished up the day with a 6th place finish in the 4x400m relay (Shania Brown, Tatyana Moore, Adora Brown, Latavia Cook).

The boys were able to compete and finish well also. Erick Stevens picked up a sectional birth in the 110 Hurdles with a second place finish. Erick also finished 6th in the 300 hurdles. Freshman Hayden Roy and Gavin Fletcher finished 5th in the 110h and 7th in the 300h respectively. Freshman Moses Young was able to pick up a 7th place finish in the 1600m run. The boys 4x200m relay (Lagonza Heyward, Akeem Holland, Hayden Roy, Mike Polke) qualified for the May 5th sectional meet with a 4th place finish. The boys 4x100m relay (Heyward, Polke, Stevens, Scott) were on their way to a third place finish when our anchor leg suffered a pulled hamstring but was able still gut out a 6th place finish.  The boys finished up the day with a 5th place finish in the 4x400m relay (Erick Stevens, Hayden Roy, Gavin Fletcher, Devontae Smith).

Congratulations to the boys and girls track teams and good luck to the sectional qualifiers.
